Kiruna stadshus

The town of Kiruna is moving to another place and here is one of the buildings that won't survive it: its City Hall.

(The upper sign tells that the building won a prestigeous architecture prize in 1964, the lower one tells that the building is listed as a cultural-historical heritage and is protected by law.)

A close up on the clock tower. It's planned to preserve it and place by the new City Hall.

Let's go inside.

Obviously Yule is popular here. (The photo was made in July.)

Why is the town moving?

It happened to be built on an iron ore ridge and now it got in the way for the mining company. So either move the town and keep the jobs or keep the town and the mine gets closed i.e. the majority of the people in the town lose their jobs.

Yes, it is. But given the circumstances it doesn't seem like there are many other options unfortunately.

Wow... It seems the cost of moving it would be huge. Does the mining company pay?

It does. I know that it pays for building of a new City Hall and for moving of some few of the most valuable historical buildings. It's possible that it pays for something else as well. And it promises to stay in the town and provide it with jobs and pay taxes.
